Confidence is KEY to a child learning to read!
It's OK to let them read a story they know really well, over and over or an 'easy' book, as this will build their confidence.
If the books coming home from school are boring, hit your local library. They have loads of incredible books that can match your child's interests. Don't worry if they are not the right level.
Read to your child
Read with your child
Listen to your child read
- Choose books your child is interested in.
- Ask your child to read the words you know they can.
- Talk about the pictures before reading each page.
- Tell them some of the tricky subject words (such as 'Tyrannosaurus Rex' or 'predator') before you get started reading.
- Go digital: use the links to Literacy Websites on the Home Page.
- Talk about the stories for as much time as you read them.
WHAT DO I DO WHEN THEY GET STUCK ON A WORD THEY DON'T KNOW????
Here are some reading strategies to practise with your child as they are building their knowledge of words.
Tackle each strategy one at a time.
Reading Hopscotch
Reinforce blends etc by adding them to a hopscotch. When you get the the blend your rock landed on you must say a word starting with that blend. You could use this for diagraphs (ch, sh, wh, th), plurals (-s, -es, -ies), word endings and much more.
